You step out of the shower and one time you're staring at a dense haze, the next time you can see yourself almost immediately sharp again. That difference is rarely down to the size or price of the mirror. It has to do with three things that reinforce each other: the temperature difference between the glass and the air, the amount of moisture that lingers in the bathroom, and the way the glass surface itself is treated. Anyone who understands those three factors can largely control the fogging — sometimes with nothing more than opening a window, sometimes with a thin protective layer on the glass.
Fogging isn't magic, nor is it a sign that your mirror is of poor quality. It's condensation. Warm, humid air from the shower hits a cold surface. The air cools down, can no longer hold the moisture, and releases it as tiny droplets. On glass, you see those droplets as a haze.
What's important is that condensation prefers to settle in spots where it can easily adhere: dust, limescale residue, soap splashes, fingerprints, and microscopically small scratches. A spotlessly clean glass surface has fewer of those anchor points, which makes it harder for droplets to attach and causes the haze to form differently — and often less stubbornly. That already explains part of the difference between two mirrors in the same bathroom.
The colder the mirror relative to the humid air, the faster and more densely it fogs up. A mirror hanging right against a cold exterior wall cools down further than a mirror on an interior wall. In winter, the difference is greater than in summer, simply because the glass is colder. This is also why a mirror is often completely fogged up right after showering, while a few minutes later it clears up on its own: the glass slowly warms up and the moisture evaporates again.
Humid air has to go somewhere. If the bathroom stays closed, the humidity rises quickly and stays high. If you open a window or door, or have working extraction, the humid air is carried away before it gets the chance to settle en masse on the glass. In practice, most people notice this as the biggest difference: the same mirror fogs up much less in a bathroom that can be aired out immediately after showering.
Some mirrors have an antifog layer. That's a thin, transparent coating that changes the glass surface. Instead of moisture settling as a closed haze, it forms into small droplets that quickly roll off or dry more easily. Such a layer isn't a miracle cure and eventually wears out, but it does explain why two seemingly identical mirrors behave differently. Incidentally, a mirror without a coating can perform better than one with, if it's cleaner and better ventilated.
