A camera lens is not an ordinary piece of glass. Modern lenses are fitted with multiple thin coatings that improve light refraction, reduce reflections, and help repel dirt. These coatings are fragile and can be permanently damaged by incorrect cleaning. Scratches on the front lens are usually not the result of dust or sand, but of careless wiping behavior. When you wipe directly over a dusty lens with a microfiber cloth, the dust particles act like sandpaper. Even the finest grains of sand leave micro-scratches that eventually degrade the contrast and sharpness of your photos. Always blow or brush away the loose dirt first.
Cleaning solution belongs on the cloth, not on the lens. When you spray liquid directly onto the front lens, it can run along the edges into the lens mount. That is where seal edges and moving parts are located that are not intended to come into contact with liquids. You also run the risk of making streaks worse instead of removing them.
Glass cleaner containing ammonia, alcohol, or abrasive ingredients is disastrous for a lens's anti-reflective coating. These products can chemically attack the coating, causing the lens to become dull and more susceptible to reflections. So-called all-purpose cleaners are also not recommended, as they often contain perfume, dyes, or degreasers that leave residue behind.
A microfiber cloth that picks up dirt and is then used again without being folded spreads that dirt across the rest of the lens. Always use a clean, dry section of the cloth and refold it with every wiping motion.
A good cleaning routine always begins with removing loose dirt. Use a lens blower or a soft lens brush for this. First blow across the surface to remove dust, then brush away any more stubborn particles. This step prevents you from pushing dirt across the coating during wet cleaning.

Additionally, it is wise to use separate cloths for your lens and for, for example, your displays. A cloth that has been in your bag may have picked up dust particles that can damage a clean lens. Therefore, store your lens cloth in a separate case or pouch.
A UV or neutral filter that you screw onto the lens acts as an affordable sacrificial layer. When a drop of water lands on the front lens or you accidentally touch the glass with your finger, it is often the filter that gets dirty, not the actual lens. Cleaning a filter can be done with the same steps as the lens itself, but you can use a bit more pressure because a filter is less vulnerable than the front lens with its specific coatings.
Yet a filter is not indestructible either. The coating on a filter is often less durable than that on a modern camera lens. This means that you should not use aggressive products here either. When you remove a filter, store it in a protective case and keep the thread clean and dry so that it does not get stuck on the lens. Sand or small pebbles in the thread can cause scratches on the metal mount and make the filter difficult to unscrew.
The best way to keep your camera lens clean is to keep dirt out as much as possible. Always use a lens cap when the camera is not in use and fit a protective filter when shooting in environments with lots of dust, sand, or splashing water. Also pay attention to where you put the camera down. A sandy beach or the back seat of a car are not ideal places for an open lens mount.
